  16.    This RFC describes the Terms of Reference of RIPE (Reseaux IP
  17.    Europeens), the cooperation of European IP networks.  This memo
  18.    provides information for the Internet community.  It does not specify
  19.    any standard.

  21.    Distribution of this memo is unlimited.

  23. 1. Terms of Reference of RIPE
  24.  
  25.    Recognising that IP networks are growing beyond the LAN's in Europe,
  26.    and are extending over national and international WAN's in Europe,
  27.    the RIPE coordinating body has been created.  RIPE stands for the
  28.    "Reseaux IP Europeens".
  29.  
  30.    The objective of RIPE is to ensure the necessary administrative and
  31.    technical coordination to allow the operation and expansion of a
  32.    pan-European IP network.
  33.  
  34.       o RIPE acts as a forum for the exchange of technical information
  35.         and the creation of expertise on IP networking.
  36.  
  37.       o The area of relevance for RIPE is Europe.
  38.  
  39.       o All parties operating wide area IP networks are encouraged to
  40.         participate.
  41.  
  42.       o RIPE promotes and coordinates interconnection of IP networks
  43.         within Europe and to other continents.
  44.  
  45.       o RIPE establishes agreement on common network management
  46.         practices and the operational management of the interconnected
  47.         networks.
  48.  
  49.       o RIPE serves as a focal point for other common activities of the
  50.         participants related to IP networking.
  51.  
  52.       o All documents produced by RIPE will be publicly available.

  54.       o RIPE is not a network service provider.  IP networks
